Being bipolar is having the mood swings.
The manias (being happy) symptoms: decreased need for sleep, reduced appetite, racing thoughts, pressured, fast speech, deistractibility, loss of judgement and self control, unrealistic beliefs.
Depression symptoms (being sad): weight changes related to an increase or decrease in appetite, sleeping too little or too much, loss of interest or pleasure in activities, inability to concentrate, feelings of guilt or worthlessness, suicidal thoughts or actions, tearfulness, excessively low mood or sadness.
I hope that helps a bit and I wish your friend (and her mum) the best of luck.
You are correct when you say its from mania to depression. The manic part can be from being super happy and energetic, to very hostile or mean.
When someone is in the manic phase, they usually don’t need as much sleep and they don’t seem to think things through.
The depression is usually enough that the person doesn’t seem to be herself. Maybe she doesn’t want to leave the home or maybe she stops eating or eating a lot more than normal.
There are many symptoms, but its the history that a healthcare provider will look at. If she has been this way for awhile and possibly been treated for depression, a doctor will definitely take bipolar into consideration.
Good luck
