It tends to be hereditary, but it is definitely not learned. When one is bipolar, one has an imbalance of chemicals in the brain, and that is simply something that one cannot “learn” to do…
Good for you to try and learn more about your illness…as long as you take your medication you should be able to maintain a completely normal life…without the meds, though, life can be tough. My father-in-law is bi-polar, and without the meds he is very difficult to be around…

As you know, there are many subtypes of “Bipolar Disorder”
It is also known as the disease that sleeps, because it can suddenly just hunker down and hibernates; waiting for the next inopportune time to strike. Bipolar disorder is hereditary according to the latest studies.
Bipolar disorder is a complex psychiatric disorder. It affects the neurotransmitters of the brain, causing emotions to short circuit. The disease (bipolar is a disease) can hibernate for years within the body. Then suddenly bipolar disorder will strike, putting the victim into either a manic stage, or one of unexplained euphoria.
In conclusion, Bipolar disorder is hereditary, but it may take years to present symptoms in sufferers.

It can be caused both by genetic factors and environmental factors. For instance, about 1/3-1/2 of adults who are bipolar had traumatic childhoods.
Also, you don’t “learn” psychological disorders. A child doesn’t become bipolar by watching bipolar adults around them for instance.

  4. Your Assistant says:

It is a mental disorder that is a lot more rare than it is diagnosed.
It is not a learned behaviour and can be hereditary but mostly just random.
It can be overcome and so if you have it do not panic. You can get help.

Bipolar is a chemical unbalance….Both my son’s have it…..One takes meds for it and the other just learns to deal with it because he doesn’t like how the meds make him feel. You can learn to control it and not let it take over your life. You can take a very lite dosage of whatever meds your doctor prescribes and see how you feel. Trying doing a little research online and see what you find out and don’t depend on what all of us out here in la la land tell ya….Good Luck!

Bipolar is also known as Manic Depressive Syndrome. With depression there are many different types, both hereditary and the effects life. You can’t learn to be bipolar but you can ‘become’ it.

  7. MarineCh says:

    it’s definitely hereditary.
Me and both my sisters grew up with a bipolar mother.
Turns out I’m the only one with the bipolar disease.
and we all grew up with it.
    hope that helps!

It’s hereditary because I think it’s in your genetic make-up. I do not think one can learn the behavior because it’s a disorder.

  9. cricket says:

I don’t think it is learned.
